Sunset lane reduction set

STEUBENVILLE — Westbound traffic on Sunset Boulevard will be reduced to one lane from Forest Avenue to Pico Street from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the city's engineering department reports.

Motorists should be alert and prepared for lane reductions and slower speeds through the construction area, officials added.

This closure is needed to allow a contractor to replace a concrete walk in the area of the existing bus stop shelter on Sunset Boulevard.

For information, contact City Engineer Michael Dolak at (740) 283-6000, extension 3303.

Man charged for domestic incident

COLLIERS — A Colliers man has been charged with domestic battery and interfering with emergency communications in connection with an incident on Friday.

The case against James V. Hall, 36, of 78 Decca Lane, is pending in Brooke County Magistrate Court.

Brooke County sheriff's deputies reported finding Hall in the area of St. John's Road and Elson Run while responding to a 911 call in which a man said his wife was suicidal before hanging up.

Deputies said when they arrived, Hall told them he and his wife heard a woman talking about suicide and he believed her to be in that area, but the officers weren't able to find her.

According to court documents, the sheriff's department was dispatched early the next day to Hall's home after a woman there called 911. The woman, who was known to Hall, said she had been trying to get away from him the previous day when he pushed her over a hillside near St. John's Road.

Deputies said she told them she called 911 because Hall had threatened her and that he hung up the phone before she could complete the call.

They said the woman had black eyes, a large wound to her back and scrapes and cuts to her arms and legs.

Ohio senators want more tax cuts

COLUMBUS — More income tax cuts and a phased-in universal voucher program are among the hundreds of changes in a Republican-crafted proposal announced Tuesday for Ohio's nearly $86 billion state budget.

The two-year funding proposal already cleared the GOP-led House in April with bipartisan support, but a raucous vote on the floor hinted that a split in the House's Republican supermajority is still alive and well and left questions about how they’ll iron out a final product with the Senate.

And there will likely be lots to iron out. The Senate's latest budget proposal made some significant changes and more could be on the way before a scheduled June 15 vote.
